Overview
Northwest College of Art and Design is proud of its students and their hard work, and when midterms approach, the school wants to motivate them through stressful times. The poster’s goal is to advertise an upcoming Summerfest, with ice cream and root beer floats to encourage students to come together to socialize and de-stress. It was meant to be advertised through digital and physical channels. The school’s education director tasked me to create a poster however I liked and complete it as soon as possible. The whole project took three days to complete.
Results
The people of the project liked the poster’s illustration, providing an enchanting and vibrant summer vibe. Students liked how the advertisement has a different visual style because many posters around the school promoting events follow a more graphic approach with photos and photo editing.
Illustration
When making the illustration, the goal was to make the ice cream and root beer the second visual the viewer saw. The composition for the piece was first done in grayscale to ensure there was a clear focal point understanding of the subject. Afterwards, glazed the illustration in saturated blues and browns to create contrast and cohesion between the foreground and background. The bubbles throughout the piece guide the viewer’s eye and enhance the feeling of summer.
Editorial Design
It was challenging to make the font legible while making sure there were no tangents with elements. To keep titles like “Nothing but Fictitious Gods” and “Monster Hunters,” I added a drop shadow and bezel, not only to make it legible but also to be the next text the reader sees after looking at the hunter and masthead. For the right page of the spread, I wanted to replicate the hunter’s journal; they have a lot of paper textures with illustrations of the environment. Keeping with the theme of monsters, I got Monster illustrations and paper textures, and added some white faded boxes between the text in the background to make it legible for the readers.
